Pennsylvania Jazz Collective announces two special Phil Woods Tributes.

Bethlehem, PA, February 2018:  The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective announces two upcoming events to celebrate the late, great Phil Woods, a legendary saxophonist and composer.

The Celebration Saxophone Quartet, comprised of Nelson Hill (soprano saxophone), Matt Vashlishan (alto saxophone), Neil Wetzel (tenor saxophone) and Jay Rattman (baritone saxophone) will perform two concerts in tribute to Phil Woods and his arrangements for this particular ensemble.

The first concert will take place in the Lehigh Valley at Foy Concert Hall on Moravian College’s Church Street Campus in Bethlehem, PA at 4PM on the Sunday February 25th. Admission for the event is $15 or $10 for seniors/students. Tickets are available at

The group recorded an album last year of the songs they will be performing entitled “Phil Woods Works for Saxophone,” these concerts will serve as the CD’s official release. The concert will include performances of “Three Improvisations for Sax Quartet“ and a piece called “Deer Head Sketches” in which Woods outlines all the different rooms of the famous jazz club with musical movements.

Phil Woods was known for constantly revising his work. In addition to writing for jazz quartet, little big band and full big band, he also wrote more through composed, classical-type pieces. The recording combines all of those parameters into one by featuring the latest revisions of some of Phil’s well known sax quartet music. The members of the quartet had a relationship with Phil, rehearsing all of this music with him before his passing in 2015.

The Quartet will then travel to the Poconos to perform the second concert at the Deer Head Inn (5 Main Street Delaware Water Gap, PA) on Sunday March 4th from 5-8PM. This concert will also feature a rhythm section of Paul Rostock on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums. In addition to the Woods’ compositions; each saxophonist will be featured individually and in different configurations on this gig.

The album is co-produced by the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective and Minsi Ridge Records and will be available at both events for $20.00
